AN ANCIENT HERITAGE

Why Should You Learn Ottoman Turkish?

The Ottoman Turkish Course is a course that attracts the attention of those interested in history, establishing a strong bridge between the past and the present. Unlike modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish is a historical language that uses the Arabic alphabet and possesses a rich vocabulary. While starting to learn with a different alphabet may initially seem challenging for those interested in history, for whom Ottoman Turkish is relatively easier to learn, it will become quite easy over time with systematic practice. In each period of our training, which continues 2 days a week for 3 hours a day, totaling 72 hours, the quality of student-centered lessons covers not only grammar but also reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Ottoman Turkish Course

If you already have a background in Ottoman Turkish (mastery of the alphabet and basic printed reading), you can directly enroll in our Detailed or Advanced level groups following a level assessment at our institution.
The Beginner and Detailed (Intermediate) levels focus more on printed works and basic grammar. However, when you complete our 'Advanced Level' program, you will gain the competence to read and examine handwritten texts such as Rika, which is frequently used in archives.
It is aimed at both. While providing a professional background for students aiming for an academic career (History, Literature, etc. departments), a very suitable and enjoyable curriculum is offered for individuals who want to read a document left by their grandfather for hobby purposes or preserve their cultural heritage.

Why is Learning Ottoman Turkish Important?

Ottoman Turkish is the language of science, art, literature, and statecraft of a global empire that ruled over three continents for six centuries. Millions of manuscripts, edicts, diplomas, and literary texts in our libraries and state archives were written in this language. Knowing Ottoman Turkish is a necessity for anyone who wants to read and understand our history, culture, and literature directly from original sources rather than translations of Western sources. Furthermore, being able to read a deed, an old tombstone, or a historical fountain inscription left by our ancestors gives an individual an invaluable cultural treasure and sense of belonging.

Is Ottoman Turkish a Difficult Language?

There is a common misconception in society that Ottoman Turkish is a difficult and completely foreign language to learn. On the contrary, Ottoman Turkish is actually the Turkish of its period. It simply features a higher density of Arabic and Persian words in its vocabulary and uses Arabic script as its alphabet. The spoken language and core skeleton of the language remain Turkish. With the modern and student-centered approach we offer at Avcılar English Language Course, the alphabet stage, which initially seems unfamiliar, is quickly overcome. When practiced with the right methods, you will see in a short time how enjoyable and relatively easy learning it is.
