Chinese Language Levels at HSK Standards
HSK 1: Beginner Level (At Least 150 Words)
This is the entry-level to Chinese. It enables individuals to understand basic vocabulary and simple grammar rules for daily use.
- Having knowledge of at least 150 Chinese words (characters).
- Understanding and using very simple daily expressions.
- Introducing oneself and establishing basic-level communication.
HSK 2: Basic Level (At Least 300 Words)
The level where basic communication skills are developed and basic vocabulary and sentence structures used in daily life are grasped.
- Reaching a vocabulary of at least 300 words.
- Ability to communicate simply regarding shopping, asking directions, and daily routines.
- Recognizing basic Chinese characters (Hanzi) and starting to write.
HSK 3: Intermediate Level (At Least 600 Words)
The threshold level where one begins to be independently proficient across all Chinese reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
- Requires knowledge of at least 600 words.
- Comfortably meeting basic communication needs in work, school, and social life.
- Handling most situations encountered during a trip to China.
HSK 4: Upper-Intermediate Level (At Least 1,200 Words)
An upper-intermediate stage where the ability to understand more complex language structures, vocabulary, and language usage is acquired.
- Possessing a wide vocabulary of at least 1,200 words.
- Ability to discuss in Chinese across a wide range of topics (economy, culture, etc.).
- Ability to communicate at a high standard with native Chinese speakers.
HSK 5: Advanced Level (At Least 2,500 Words)
The level where one can operate on subjects requiring in-depth understanding using sufficient vocabulary and knowledge of language structure.
- An advanced vocabulary of at least 2,500 words.
- Easily reading and understanding Chinese newspapers, magazines, and articles.
- Ability to follow Chinese movies and TV shows, and deliver lengthy talks.
HSK 6: Expert Level (At Least 5,000 Words)
The mastery stage closest to native proficiency, requiring a very high level of vocabulary and knowledge of language structures.
- Requirement of knowing at least 5,000 (or more) words.
- Understanding and interpreting highly complex topics used in academia and the business world.
- Instantly comprehending any information heard or read, and expressing it flawlessly in oral/written form.
